Why canonical tags matter

A canonical URL tells search engines which version of a page should be indexed when similar or duplicate URLs exist (HTTP vs HTTPS, www vs non-www, tracking parameters, or syndicated content).

What to look for

Match: canonical points to the same URL as your preferred version—good for consolidating signals.
Self-reference: many sites use a self-referencing canonical on every unique page—still verify it matches after redirects.
Mismatch: canonical points elsewhere—intentional (syndication) or a bug; fix if the wrong URL is preferred.
Missing: search engines may pick their own preferred URL; add explicit canonicals on templates where duplicates are common.
